{"id":7819,"date":"2022-05-17T06:46:08","date_gmt":"2022-05-17T11:46:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/americacellbank.com.co\/sin-categorizar\/what-is-stem-cell-treatment-for-diabetes"},"modified":"2024-08-14T09:24:45","modified_gmt":"2024-08-14T14:24:45","slug":"what-is-stem-cell-treatment-for-diabetes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/americacellbank.com.co\/en\/blog\/therapeutic-applications\/what-is-stem-cell-treatment-for-diabetes\/","title":{"rendered":"What is stem cell treatment for diabetes?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Stem cell therapy <a href=\"https:\/\/www.americacellbank.com.co\/celulas-madre\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>stem cell therapy<\/strong><\/a> is being increasingly recommended and applied to the treatment of serious and disabling diseases.<br \/>\nThis set of techniques, which <strong>consist of the use of germ cells for the regeneration of organs and tissues<\/strong>, has proven to have great versatility.<br \/>\nOne of the diseases for which treatment alternatives based on this discipline are being studied is diabetes.    <\/p>\n<h2>Why stem cells?<\/h2>\n<p>  Current <strong>treatments for diabetes <\/strong>are symptomatic.<br \/>\nSeveral patients with type 1 or type 2 diabetes have to inject insulin at least 5 times a day and keep daily control of their glucose levels, in addition to a low-carbohydrate diet.<br \/>\nThis greatly reduces the quality of life and, on top of that, does not fully counteract the consequences of constant hyperglycemia.<br \/>\nThe results of the trials carried out so far suggest that, <strong>by means of germ cells, especially mesenchymal cells, the defective Beta cells can be replaced<\/strong> and pancreatic function restored, thus enabling patients with diabetes mellitus to be completely cured.     <\/p>\n<h2>How much progress has been made?<\/h2>\n<p>  It is clear that <strong>the beta cells of the pancreas release insulin to counteract the increase in blood glucose levels <\/strong>and that in type 1 diabetes the immune system destroys these cells, i.e. it is an autoimmune disease.<br \/>\nHowever,<strong> specialists have successfully produced Beta cells from pluripotent cells and are studying how to protect them from the immune system<\/strong>.<br \/>\nIn type 2 diabetes, Beta cells produce insulin naturally, but the body&#8217;s other cells do not take up normal levels of this hormone; <strong>the incorporation of new Beta cells produced from embryonic ones can help to increase insulin levels so that the cells can take up insulin<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<strong>The company <\/strong><strong><u><a href=\"https:\/\/canaldiabetes.com\/johnson-johnson-y-viacyte\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ViaCite<\/a><\/u><\/strong><strong> of San Diego, with funding from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine, succeeded in 2008 in converting embryonic cells into Beta progenitor cells<\/strong> that, when tested in animals with induced diabetes, somehow managed to resist the immune system&#8217;s attack.<br \/>\n<strong>In another trial, in this case from the University of Washington in 2016 and led by Dr. <\/strong><strong><u><a href=\"https:\/\/temas.sld.cu\/vigilanciaensalud\/2020\/05\/05\/revierten-la-diabetes-en-ratones-con-celulas-madre-geneticamente-modificadas-derivadas-de-pacientes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jeffrey R. Millman<\/a><\/u><\/strong><strong>successfully produced Beta cells<\/strong> that are much more sensitive and versatile in insulin production than native ones.     There is yet another study, published in Nature Biothecnology and led <strong>by the Spaniard Diego <\/strong> Balboa <strong><u><a href=\"https:\/\/medicinaysaludpublica.com\/noticias\/endocrinologia-diabetes\/avances-en-el-tratamiento-de-la-diabetes-con-celulas-madre-ya-no-es-ciencia-ficcion\/13204\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Diego Balboa<\/a><\/u><\/strong><strong>of the Center for Genomic Regulation<\/strong>, in which it was demonstrated that germ cells can generate other cells equivalent in function to the Beta cells of the pancreatic islets.  <\/p>\n<h2>Benefits of this technique<\/h2>\n<p>  Below, you will be able to observe and analyze some of the benefits that this medical<br \/>\n<strong>advantages that this medical technology will offer<\/strong> once it begins to be applied on a regular basis:   <\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>It will eliminate the need for daily insulin injections.<\/li>\n<li>A low glucose diet and the use of sweeteners will no longer be necessary.<\/li>\n<li>Patients will be able to be completely cured of diabetes, without the need for any additional treatment.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>  One thing to keep in mind, however, is that <strong>diabetes permanently impairs the body&#8217;s anatomy<\/strong>, including damage to nerves, muscles and the cardiovascular system.<br \/>\nBeta cell production and implantation cannot reverse this damage, so the earlier diabetes is diagnosed and the sooner replacement therapy is initiated, the <strong>better the chances of success<\/strong>.<br \/>\nDiabetes is currently a major global public health problem, with about 1.5 million deaths in the world. <strong><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/es\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/diabetes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1.5 million deaths<\/a><\/u><\/strong> in 2019 alone, making it the ninth leading cause of death in that year.<br \/>\nGerm cell research for the treatment of diabetes sheds a light of hope on this bleak outlook. <strong>References:<\/strong><u><a href=\"https:\/\/canaldiabetes.com\/johnson-johnson-y-viacyte\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/canaldiabetes.com\/johnson-johnson-y-viacyte\/<\/a><\/u><u><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/es\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/diabetes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.who.int\/es\/news-room\/fact-sheets\/detail\/diabetes<\/a><\/u>   <\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Stem cell therapy stem cell therapy is being increasingly recommended and applied to the treatment of serious and disabling diseases.
