This news is a reality!

For the first time in history a woman is cured 100% of HIV, since 2017 until today she is totally healthy, thanks to umbilical cord stem cell blood transplantation.

Let us recall that stem cells derived from umbilical cord blood (hematopoietic or CD34+) are used for transplantation.
– They are the preferred and most effective option for the treatment of childhood cancers and are used for more than 70 diseases such as leukemias, lymphomas, among others… – They are found in peripheral blood and bone marrow.
– They have great potential, i.e. stem cells can generate mature cells of different origin, for example, blood or muscle cells.
– They can achieve self-renewal, these cells can divide and proliferate to generate other stem cells indefinitely.
This study demonstrates the efficacy of hematopoietic stem cells, where they were infused along with stem cells from one of the patient’s relatives to increase the chances of success of the procedure.
This allowed the New York-based patient to be weaned off her HIV antiviral medications, giving her health and quality of life.
